Post Bariatric Surgery Makeover

There is significant skin laxity following Bariatric Surgery .The weight stabilizes at about 11/2 to 2 years and that is the time when body contouring procedures have to be considered. The desired weight loss is achieved; life threatening medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension are abated. However, at this stage many post bariatric surgery patients feel like young people trapped in very old looking bodies, with all the loose hanging skin folds. This leads to depression .Body contouring after major weight loss improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue that supports fat and skin and removes excess sagging fat and skin.

After a weight reduction surgery, or any substantial amount of weight loss, the skin and tissues often lack elasticity and cannot conform to the reduced body size. As a result, skin that has been severely stretched now is unsupported:

  • Upper arms may sag and appear loose and full
  • Breasts may flatten and hang with nipples pointed downward
  • Abdominal area may extend around the sides and into the lower back area, resulting in an apron-like overhang
  • Buttocks, groin and thighs can sag and cause hanging pockets of skin

Surgical body contouring following major weight loss improves the shape and tone of your underlying tissue that supports fat and skin, and removes excess sagging fat and skin. The procedures done are:

  • Facelift
  • Tummy tuck: to correct sagging of the abdomen.
  • Breast lift: corrects sagging, flattened breasts
  • Arm lift: corrects sagging of the upper arms
  • Thigh lift: corrects sagging of the inner and outer thigh
  • Buttock lift

Body contouring is often performed in stages. The patient’s condition and goals, as well as Dr.Sharma’s decision, will all influence on how your surgical plan is made.

  • Adults of any age whose weight loss has stabilized following a bariatric surgery. Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that can impair healing or increase risk of surgery
  • Anesthesia: It is performed under general anesthesia.
  • The incision: All body contouring procedures require incisions to remove excess skin.
Incision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed, as well as Dr.Sharma’s surgical decision. The incisions are generally taken in strategic locations where they can be hidden by most types of clothing, but this is not always possible.
  • Duration of procedure: Varies as per procedure. About 2 – 5 hours.
Inpatient/Outpatient Pricedure:
It is an inpatient procedure. Hospitalisation for 2 – 3 days is required.

It takes about 2- 6 weeks per procedure.
